Two Worlds — The Shungite Medium, Epilogue

The Mechanism and the Practice · Chapter summary · from The Shungite Medium by Gary Fong

I closed the book with two versions of the same body. The first is the one most people are already living. The body sits in a field of hostile electrons, a mosquito-like static off the phone in the pocket, the router in the corner, the tower three blocks away, the satellite overhead. Cell processes, metabolism, brain activity and sleep all get interrupted in small ways the body registers but cannot identify. There is no drain for any of it.

The second version is the same body in the same field, now in contact with a conductive carbon surface the field can dump into. Pendant, bracelet, pocket stone, phone plate, water in the morning. In my account the hostile electrons enter the fullerene cage, lose their hyper-energy against the angles of the pentagons, and come out as ordinary electrons, the kind found at the base of a tree. The stone does not make the field go away. It gives the field somewhere to go. The forest used to be enough. For most lives it is no longer in the room.

From the chapter

Two versions. One or the other, the body in the field with no drain, or the body in the field with a drain. Once they are side by side, the difference is hard to unsee. The stone does not promise that the field will go away. It promises only what the chemistry actually does, which is to give the field somewhere to go. The forest used to be enough. For most people, in most lives, the forest is no longer in the room. The stone is the smallest and oldest version of what the forest used to be — carbon, doing what carbon does, on a body that has run out of ways to ground.
